Jazz Shifter

Galen Joseph-Hunter of free103point9 asked me if I would like to make a sculpture for the Assembled: Free Jazz+Electronics music event and I was very happy to come up with the Jazz Shifter. It uses two surplus tractor shift units mounted side by side. These units are wired up so that the participant (it's interactive) can cut-up and mix 5 or 6 classic jazz tracks (Take Five by Brubeck, A Love Supreme by Coltrane, something by Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, etc). Pretty simple and straightforward but still a reflection on themes I have pursued for a long time (re-contextualization of surplus technology and interactivity) plus hopefully a reflection of the context of the event (jazz, electronics, cut-up, mixing, sampling, performance).
