Angling more toward the free and droney rather than the polished acts (and instruments) currently gracing the stages of the JVC fest, this mini-assemblage speaks to a more modulated audience of electronic eclectics, free jazz freaks, and no-fi gearheads. On the roof, Sapat and the SB make free with the noise and build complex sound fields, while Matthew Shipp and Guillermo Brown, Triptych Myth minus one, Matt Mikas and Daniel Carter, N.R.A., Mogami, and many others perform indoors. The gadget of honor is Paul Davies "Jazz-Shifter," two modified tractor gear shifts that allow users to cut up and recontextualize jazz history by rewiring Brubeck to Davis to Parker to Coltrane.
